Sky Expands Broadband Services With More WiFi Hotspots Increased Coverage And Fibre Optics

Sky have recently announced big plans to build on their broadband service. Overall this will give customers a lot more choice and freedom with their service. As one of the fastest expanding telecommunications companies in the UK,

over 29% of UK homes now take all three services –Sky Broadband, calls and TV. It was also reported that during the last three months of 2011, over half a million home products were sold.

Sky are planning to build on their broadband services in three different ways. The first way they plan to do so is by increasing their coverage. They have estimated that by June 2013 over 1 million additional homes will be included in their network. This means that 88% of the country will be able to have access to the service.

Secondly, the broadband provider are increasing their number of Wi-Fi hotspots. Wi-Fi hotspots enable the customer to connect from a wide number of public spaces in the same way as they would do at home. Customers eligible for free Wi-Fi access will be those with the Broadband Unlimited service. Those subscribers will then be able to connect to up to 10,000 hotspots around the country.

Lastly, Sky will be introducing their fibre optic broadband service to all customers, giving them the option of having a lightening-fast connection. This is because fibre optic technology enables broadband to be received through a glass network, rather than through traditional copper wires. This makes it extremely reliable, with incredibly fast download speeds of up to 40MB. It will be an unlimited service too, with not usage caps. This exciting new service is estimated to be available to 30% of homes by the end of April. It will then be introduced to more homes gradually throughout the year.

Lastly, existing customers can simply add the Sky Broadband service to their subscription for which they need to pay £3.75 a month for 12 months followed by £7.50 a month along with Line Rental charges.
