CityFibre and Fujitsu join forces to deliver pure fibre infrastructure throughout UK cities
CityFibre, one of the companies that is currently leading the fibre optic infrastructure market in the UK, and Fujitsu, the internationally-renowned information technology service provider, ended the month of April with the announcement that they will be teaming up to further the plans of CityFibre to implement advanced pure fibre infrastructures throughout the UK’s second-tier cities.
This is a deal that is reportedly worth an initial £50 million in terms of the estimated contract value for the Japanese company, and marks the second time that the two companies have worked together – Fujitsu constructed the 103k fibre optic network that CityFibre implemented around the historic city of York. The CEOs for the two companies, Greg Mesch (CityFibre) and Andy Stevenson (Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe) have already expressed their delight to be working with each other once again, and will be hoping that this becomes a regular, mutually beneficial partnership.
Under the terms of the deal, Fujitsu will be responsible for the planning, building and eventual operation of CityFibre’s carrier-grade infrastructure. As demonstrated with the work it assisted on in York, the company has a huge amount of experience and capability when it comes to working on big projects, although CityFibre is by no means inexperienced, having made a commitment to create new communications networks rather than renovating the old ones that have surpassed the point at which they were most effective. Nevertheless, Fujitsu’s involvement will surely boost the confidence of everyone else involved that this project can finally get off the ground and deliver everything that has been promised since its announcement. Once the work is completed, it is hoped that the infrastructure will reach over a million homes and 50,000 businesses across the country.
This deal has also highlighted the fact that the residents of smaller cities are not being forgotten as better communications systems are set up – the bigger companies like BT and Virgin are concentrating on getting cities like London and Manchester up to speed, so it is to CityFibre’s credit that smaller cities are still very much on the radar. In addition to this project, the company will also continue to work on its goal of providing staggeringly fast internet speeds of up to 1GB per second to 24,000 homes in the Bournemouth area by the end of the year.
Fibre-optic broadband service in high demand in UK
Recent surveys suggest that the demand for fibre-optic broadband services in UK seems to rising at an astronomical level and the government needs to develop infrastructure that will meet these demands and make the service available to all consumers in UK.
The advanced technology has swept the UK market like a tidal wave with increasing competition and constant development of latest technological gadgets. But the survey further expounds that this technology is being accessed by only economically viable areas while rural areas especially seem to lagging behind.
Mr Dawson and industry official stated that government intervention was vital for rural broadband development to start taking place. According to him force is unnecessary but a ‘solid, well-funded plan’ could work wonders towards reducing this disparity. He further stated that most countries that seem to be adopting a government-private joint venture to be reaping benefits of this technology while in UK the primarily urban broadband UK rollout is creating a two-tier system, where most areas of the country are left behind.
BT broadband has taken the initiative to start complete UK rollout but is still mainly focused on areas that are already partaking of their services. According to Mr. Dawson, positive and immediate initiative needs to be taken by the government with a well-funded operation focusing exclusively on rural the front.
