What To Expect With 8Mb Broadband?

When you are considering which broadband package to choose, you will probably find you are faced with a whole variety of different speeds.  Every broadband offering you see today will be listed according to the speed it offers you.

One of the most common speeds of all is the 8Mb speed.  This is one of the slowest speeds you will see advertised today, and yet it is not really slow at all.  If you remember using dial up internet you will be amazed to know that 8Mb broadband is around a hundred and sixty times quicker than a dial up connection would be!

What does 8Mb broadband actually mean?

If you sign up to a package offering 8Mb broadband, this basically refers to the maximum speed you will get with that connection.

The speed itself refers to how quickly data can be downloaded from the broadband internet.  For example a 16Mb connection would download data twice as fast as an 8Mb one.  Needless to say the faster the speed the faster you can view websites and download files.

Don’t be fooled into thinking 8Mb is slow however, especially when you see packages advertised offering speeds of 50Mb or more.  8Mb is plenty fast enough for many average internet users at home.

Do you actually get this speed?

No, and this is a very important thing to remember when you are shopping for your next broadband deal.

You will notice that lots of providers use the words ‘up to’ when they are promoting their fast internet connections.  This means you will get ‘up to 8Mb’ and not exactly 8Mb at all times.  In fact the chances of getting this exact speed are quite slim.  However this doesn’t mean you will get a slow connection – the ‘up to’ wording can be seen on every single package you consider.

Where can you find a good deal on 8Mb broadband?

The best place to look is online.  First of all you should find out what broadband providers are offering services in your area.  Not all of them will be available so check this first to save you time later.

Once you have two or three potential providers in mind, find out what their prices are.  With companies such as Sky, Plus Net and O2 to consider among others, you will find the prices for 8Mb broadband are quite competitive.

They will also be among the cheapest on offer, since this is at the lower end of the speed chart.  Be sure to check how much bandwidth you are allowed per month however; many of the cheapest deals have a limit on what you can download per month.  There may be additional charges for downloading more than your agreed limit.

So you can see 8Mb broadband has the potential to get you online quickly and for a low monthly fee.
