Through this extension, almost 277,000 homes and businesses will be able to enjoy a mix of superfast broadband services offered through FTTC and FTTH connections.
Apart from areas of Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow, 34 exchanges will witness an upgrade of service along with a few select small towns as well. By connecting exchanges located in Wales and England almost 178 additional exchanges will be appended to the current BT fibre optic list by end of 2012.
Through this initiative and upgrades, BT’s Openreach network will extend up to 80% of commercial fibre network which is slated to cover two thirds of UK premises as the year2014 will draw to an end. At present, Openreach covers 6 million premises which will soon extend to 10 million spots provided if BT receives the required funding and support from the UK government.
With hopes that more government funds will be released in the near future in order to extend fibre optic network across 90% of the premises in the UK, BT is making due progress within the country.
