Scotland has spent the past few years catching up on full fibre, and the gap with the rest of the UK is narrowing. But where you live still makes a big difference: towns and cities are now well covered, while many rural homes are still waiting.
Where Scotland stands
In January 2026, according to Ofcom:
| Homes that can get | Scotland | UK |
|---|---|---|
| Full fibre | 75% | 82% |
| Gigabit broadband | 84% | 89% |
| Superfast broadband | 97% | 98% |
Scotland's full fibre coverage has grown from 58% in January 2024 to 75% two years later. And of the homes that can get full fibre, 47% have taken it up, the same as the UK as a whole.
The urban–rural gap is wide. In Ofcom's July 2025 figures, 76% of homes in Scottish towns and cities could get full fibre, against 50% in rural areas. See how each Scottish council ranks, or look up your own town.
R100: the Scottish Government's programme
R100 ("Reaching 100%") is the Scottish Government's programme to bring superfast or better broadband to every home and business. The main build is being done by Openreach under three contracts, covering the north, centre and south of Scotland. The northern contract, which includes the Highlands and islands, is due to finish by 2028.
By 25 September 2026, the R100 contracts had connected 100,217 premises, and the voucher scheme a further 6,322.
The voucher scheme closes on 20 November 2026
The Scottish Broadband Voucher Scheme offers up to £5,000 towards a superfast or gigabit-capable connection for homes and businesses on speeds below 30Mbps that aren't covered by a planned roll-out. It closes to new applications on 20 November 2026. Applications made before then will still be processed. If you think you might qualify, check at broadband.gov.scot now.
Project Gigabit in Scotland
The UK Government's Project Gigabit is funding further rural builds, procured by the Scottish Government:
- Scottish Borders and East Lothian: GoFibre, about 11,000 premises.
- North East Scotland: GoFibre, about 63,000 premises.
- Highlands, Outer Hebrides and other areas: Openreach, expanded in January 2026 to about 77,600 premises, with much of the extra build in Dumfries and Galloway.
- Fife and Perth & Kinross: retendered in 2026. No contract had been awarded by October 2026.
